Vocapia is proud to be coordinating the EU European Defence Fund 2021 project ALADAN. ALADAN, Ai-based LAnguage technology development framework for Defence ApplicatioNs, was one of the projects selected in the Open call dedicated to SMEs for development of innovative and future-oriented defence solutions. The project officially started December 1, 2022 and will run for 42 months. The project partners are 4 SMEs from 4 EU counties, embarking on a new collaboration with complementary expertise:

Vocapia Research (Coordinator, France): Develop novel AI based training and adaptation tools for spoken language technologies.
Crowdee (Germany): Improved strategies for data collection and annotation.
Lingea (Czech Republic): Contribute to novel AI-based models and tools for translation of speech and text.
Ianus Consulting (Cyprus): Provide expertise, lead use case studies and user advisory board.

The project will design and develop a disruptive framework of development for Artificial Intelligence (AI) based language solutions for defence applications. Four language technologies will be addressed: spoken language identification, speech recognition, spoken term search, and text and speech translation. The novel framework, Open-Domain Training for In-Domain Target (ODT-IDT) will primarily rely on the use of multidomain and selected open-source data for training while targeting in-domain data, using only a small amount of application-specific data for validation. The ambitious project aims to substantially reduce the costs (time and financial) of developing language technologies for military applications, thereby drastically reducing the barriers for their wider uptake.
